Mets 2021 Pick # 4.111 - 1B - JT Schwartz

2021 MLB Draft - Mets Pick # 4.111 - 1B - JT Schwartz - UPDATE - New Info + Mack's Spin

JT Schwartz

1B/SS         6-4         200          UCLA

Mack's spin -

JT is a solid pick at four.

You develop this kid either three ways...

1. Put him on a weight program designed to add 20 pounds of muscle and then change his trajectory.

2.  Develop him to be the next Mets major league 1B, only if Dom can develop defensively in LF and the DH is put in place for Pete.

3. Develop a top, non-pop, top hitting prospect for trade bait someday.

This past season at UCLA, Schwartz batted .396 and won the Pac-12 battling title. He also earned All-America and All-Region honors. He also had the second best on-base percentage and seventh-best batting average in a single season for the UCLA program. Schwartz also led the Bruins in RBI with 45 and walks with 37. Schwartz also had eight home runs.

The UCLA first baseman stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 210 pounds. This past year was his first full college season and he hit .405 with seven home runs. Despite his size, Schwartz doesn't boast huge power. Rather, he is a disciplined hitter with a high-contact swing that misses few pitches in the strike zone. Past hip, knee and shoulder injuries are certainly a concern, but his skills at the plate are too enticing to ignore.

2021 UCLA stat line - 44-G, 164-AB, .396, 8-HR, 45-RBI, only 28-K

JT Schwartz, 1B, UCLA

Schwartz has been the Bruins’ most consistent presence at the plate. The left-handed first baseman leads UCLA with a .405 batting average, which also lead the Pac-12 and was 14th in the country. He also ranks first in runs batted in with 41.

MLB.com has Schwartz as the 158th prospect for the 2021 draft.

119. 3B/1B JT Schwartz | School: UCLA | B / T: L / R | Ht: 6’4 | Wt: 210lbs | Age: 21.6

A projectable bat that has yet to consistently tap into the Power everyone has been waiting for. But there is clear 20+HR Potential here if he can start to bring it more in-game, to go with an Above-average Hit tool. A corner infielder, with some potential to mix in out at LF, with the likeliest outcome being 1B. If the Power starts to develop this spring, expect to see Schwartz rise 20-40 spots in the rankings.

A well known prep name from the 2018 draft class, Schwartz redshirted his freshman season in 2019, and poised to make an impact in the Bruins everyday lineup in 2020. He was a prep shortstop/third baseman that sized out of the position and has been moved across the diamond to first base. There his athleticism should make him one of the better defensive first baseman in the college game once he learns the position. While there are questions around Schwartz's defensive profile there have never been any around his ability to hit. He was on the verge of breakout in 2020, slashing .328/.380/.391, and despite the low slugging percentage his in game power was starting to come around.
